The history of the Web Professional Institute (WPI) dates back to 1998. In September of that year, not only was a company called Google founded, but also Europe's first Web Professional Academy was established in Germany.
In this academy, all internet enthusiasts could complete a training course to become a Certified Webmaster within a relatively short period of time. They learned everything they needed to know at the time to create a website and bring it online successfully. This included topics such as HTML (CSS did not yet exist), Adobe Photoshop (which did exist at the time!), CGI programming with PERL (no one does this anymore), Java Applet programming (only the internet pioneers of the time know this today), and Linux (yes, even back then, the majority of web servers ran on this operating system). The curriculum also included computer networks (TCP/IP protocol!) and network security.
The academy faced a unique challenge: a need for quality training materials. In response, they developed their own comprehensive learning material. This focus on in-depth, practical learning (»as much theory as needed, as much practice as possible«) ensured successful skill acquisition for participants.
The academy's reputation increased, attracting students across Europe seeking web development expertise. The curriculum remained adaptable, incorporating new topics and transitioning to a modular format. Recognizing the needs of other educational institutions, the academy began licensing its curriculum, addressing a critical need for high-quality training materials.
Subsequently, a consortium of institutions using the curriculum formed an association to guarantee its continued relevance to industry demands. This collaborative effort fostered a network exceeding 200 training centers, leveraging the academy's curriculum.
For over two decades, the curriculum has undergone constant development. It remains up-to-date with the latest technologies and market trends and is optimized for effective learning delivery. Thousands of graduates have leveraged this training to establish successful careers in web development.
In 2024, the Web Professional Institute acquired the curriculum rights to translate and adopt it for the US and global markets. This development empowers educational institutions worldwide to leverage WPI's expertise by offering modern, industry-aligned courses and certifications through a cutting-edge learning management system.
